Poem for Climate Camp (video)

This poem was written for Climate Camp 2010, and is a quiet complaint against touristic colonialism, holidarity, and the professionalisation of art/activism:

Edinburgh’s a city, not a month
and Scotland is my home, not a tourist destination
festival’s for always, not for once
and community is life-long love, not temporary affectation

art is daily life, not a job
and everyone campaigns, it’s not a specialist profession
solidarity’s commitment, not a tickbox
and change comes when we seize it, not make spectacles of action

the fight is everybody’s, not just ours
these words belong to you, don’t think they’re just for me to say
we talk with acts and bodies, not just mouths
to struggle is to live, not to have a summer holiday
